Dinosaurus berkembang menjadi spesies sendiri dan berpisah dari nenek
moyang mereka, archosaurus, sekitar 230 juta tahun yang lalu, pada
periode Trias Tengah hingga Trias Akhir, kira-kira 20 juta tahun setelah peristiwa kepunahan Permian-Trias yang memunahkan hampir 95% kehidupan di Bumi. Penanggalan radiometrik dari formasi batuan yang mengandung fosil dinosaurus awal seperti genus Eoraptor membuktikan bahwa hewan tersebut adalah dinosaurus tertua di Bumi. Para paleontolog berpendapat bahwa Eoraptor kemungkinan adalah nenek moyang dari semua dinosaurus; jika hal ini benar, maka bisa disimpulkan bahwa pada awalnya, karakteristik dinosaurus adalah bertubuh kecil, dan predator berkaki dua. Penemuan hewan purbakala ornithodiran yang mirip dinosaurus seperti Marasuchus dan Lagerpeton di Argentina turut mendukung pendapat ini.
Ciri - Ciri Dinosaurus
Untuk bisa diklasifikasikan sebagai dinosaurus,fosil atau dugaan dari
seekor makhluk hidup,terutama hewan,harus memiliki ciri-ciri sebagai
berikut:
- Memiliki jenis tulang panggul Saurischia atau Ornithschia.
- Hidup pada Masa Mesozoikum, binatang apapun yang hidup sebelum atau setelah Masa Mesozoikum tidak dikategorikan sebagai dinosaurus, misalnya Dimetrodon.
- Memiliki kaki tegak langsung di bawah tubuh seperti Mamalia dan Aves modern.
- Tidak memiliki sayap atau sirip berukuran besar yang difungsikan untuk terbang atau berenang.
- Bereproduksi secara ovipar.
Hingga Desember 2015, telah diketahui lebih dari 1.600 genera
dinosaurus, namun kira-kira 30% dari jumlah ini adalah nama sinonim
(tidak valid). Ini karena sama seperti pada zaman sekarang, fosil
dinosaurus sesuai dengan keadaan binatang itu saat masih bernyawa. Jika
saat masih hidup spesies dinosaurus tertentu sudah langka, maka fosilnya
akan lebih langka lagi. Salah satu contohnya adalah fosil Iguanodon, Megalosaurus atau Allosaurus, yang memiliki persebaran yang amat luas sampai terdapat di beberapa benua yang berbeda. Sebaliknya, fosil semacam Argentinosaurus, Therizinosaurus atau Deinocheirus penyebarannya amat sempit dan sangat langka.
Dinosaurus juga menggunakan sistem nama binominal nomenklatur, seperti yang dicetuskan oleh biologis Carolus Linnaeus. Setiap dinosaurus memiliki dua nama, satu nama depan sebagai nama genus dan satu nama belakang sebagai nama spesies.
Misalnya Tyrannosaurus rex, Brachiosaurus altithorax, Triceratops
horridus, atau Stegosaurus armatus. Biasanya, di luar lingkungan ilmu
pengetahuan, yang digunakan hanya nama genusnya. Namun nama lengkapnya
ternyata menarik perhatian banyak orang sehingga sering diikutsertakan,
yang berarti juga menambah arti dinosaurus itu. Misalnya Triceratops
berarti "wajah bertanduk tiga", namun jika nama spesiesnya dipakai juga
(horridus)berarti "wajah bertanduk tiga yang menakutkan".
Masa Hidup Dinosaurus
Semua dinosaurus hidup pada Masa Mesozoikum (Zaman Pertengahan) yang
berlangsung setelah Masa Paleozoikum dan sebelum Masa Kenozoikum /
Neozoikum pada Eon Fanerozoikum (Kehidupan Terlihat). Masa Mesozoikum
berlangsung antara 250-65 juta tahun yang lalu. Masa Mesozoikum dibagi
menjadi tiga periode, yaitu Periode Triasik / Trias (250-206 juta tahun
yang lalu), Jurasik / Jura (205-145 juta tahun yang lalu), dan Kretaseus
/ Kapur (144-65 juta tahun yang lalu).
Tidak semua dinosaurus hidup pada zaman yang sama, misalnya Stegosaurus dan Tyrannosaurus tidak pernah bertemu karena Stegosaurus hidup pada Periode Jurasik, sedangkan Tyrannosaurus
hidup pada Periode Kretaseus. Dinosaurus pertama muncul pada Akhir
Periode Triasik pada Kala Carnian, sekitar 237 juta tahun yang lalu,
kemudian berkembang secara konstan lalu meledak ketika Periode Jurasik
Awal. Kebanyakan dinosaurus hidup pada Periode Jurasik dan Kretaseus.
